Joy & Meta, Private Residence

Where do I even start with these two amazing women? Talk about a love story through the years! They met in grade school on the same softball team, but didn’t start dating until after college. Joy and Meta chose to have a commitment ceremony in 2004 with over 200 of their family members and friends. When Illinois legalized Civil Unions in 2011, they had another celebration to celebrate their Civil Union License. Well of course that meant when the Same Gender Marriage Law was legalized on June 1, 2014, these two knew they had to have one last celebration of their love.

I had the honor of meeting Joy & Meta in early June at the Cook County Clerk’s Office. They had each brought their “witnesses” and the amazing Kent Drake Photography was also present to witness Joy & Meta signing their Civil Union license into a Marriage license. It was an emotional moment for all of us!

A week later, we gathered at Joy’s cousin’s home in Hinsdale for a beautiful reception to celebrate the last hurdle in Joy & Meta’s journey to be legally recognized as a couple. And it was beautiful…a beautiful evening, amazing food and drink, a hoppin’ dance floor and love radiating from every guest. It was such an honor to be a part of this marvelous moment.

Joy and Meta were envisioning a very relaxed celebration, but with a hint of elegance. We worked with Julie at Entertaining Company to develop the evening with rotating stations of food so that guests could meander around the property and find new food at every turn. Joy and Meta also mentioned that they were not “flower” girls, so Julie incorporated their color palette in the linens and glass vases used to accent the dining tables. Guests began arriving at 5pm and were greeted with passed wine, sparkling water and lavender lemonade for refreshments, along with Crispy Gnocchi, a Refreshing Melon and Tiny Tortilla Cups filled with Guacamole and Charred Corn.

Besides the amazing food, guests enjoyed taking photos in the Shutterbooth and dancing all night with spinning tunes from Mark from DJ-Chicago. There were also a few very heartfelt toasts that left not a dry eye in the place. Thank you, Joy and Meta, for allowing us to be a part of your very special day! We are so proud of you and your commitment to each other.

Ashley & Aaron, The Field Museum

I was ecstatic when Ashley called me to tell me she was engaged! I planned her brother’s wedding a few years ago I knew this was going to be so much fun! Ashley and her family are family to me; my parents were with her in Italy when Aaron proposed – in Italy! Doesn’t get much better than that J And so it began….

When Ashley and Aaron walked into Stanley Field Hall at The Field Museum, we knew this was the place for them. They were beaming! We walked outside on the Northeast Terrace and Ashley told me that this was the place she wanted to marry Aaron. The Field Museum holds a special place in my heart and I was so excited to begin the planning for the next year.

Music was very important to these two and we contracted Greenlight who kept the dance floor packed the entire night. Ashley’s brother is an incredible musician and he wrote and performed a song for her during the reception. It was awesome!

Jessica at Heffernan Morgan designed this elegant affair for Ashley and Aaron. Ashley loved sunflowers so Jessica created a gorgeous Escort Card display with various heights and risers wrapped in custom navy and white fabric. The sunflowers held each guests’ escort card. The ceremony aisle featured beautiful arrangement of ivory and green hydrangea, yellow snap dragons, petite white spray roses and vibrant yellow roses. We used these arrangements near the lounge vignettes inside Stanley Field Hall for the reception; they looked incredible!   We had square and round dining tables adorned with the rich yellow, green and ivory floral combinations and added antique gold etched glass candles and votives that completed this garden party. We brought in lounge groupings on shag rugs accented with petite floral centerpieces that made Stanley Field Hall so warm and inviting. Guests were served from sleek double mirrored bars which matched the mirrored stage surround that added a touch of glamour to the dance floor area.

Ashley carried a soft and textural bouquet of pale yellow garden roses, white ranunculus, light yellow spray roses, butter garden stock and white freesia.  Aaron wore a white ranunculus with freesia for his boutonniere.

The menu planning was such a blast for all of us! Ashley and Aaron wanted to incorporate their love for Italy and Italian foods and Blue Plate worked with us to customize a perfect menu for them. We started the seated dinner off with an Antipasti Course; a Burrata Salad with sliced red and yellow tomatoes and next was the Pasta Course; Truffled Pecorino Gnocchi with a Parmesan Cream and White Truffle Oil and for the Secondi; guests’ choice of Cracked Pepper Crusted Beef or Herb Roasted Chicken Breast. Guests enjoyed a Gourmet Cappuccino Station and a Dolci Station with Italian and American petite sweets for dessert. We served Mini Sliders, Mac and Cheese Cups, Mini Grilled Cheese and Chocolate and Vanilla Milk Shakes for Late Night and guests were treated to a Candy Station with Ashley and Aaron’s favorite candy and Mini Gelato Cones as they departed.

Ashley and Aaron had the most perfect day and it was an honor for me to be a part of it. Matt and Vanessa with Avery House captured every precious moment from these two. We loved every minute of working together and I am so happy for them!!

Sarah & Jeff, Art Institute of Chicago – Modern Wing

Some couples have many celebrations around their wedding day and that was how I came to meet Sarah & Jeff. They had decided to have a small ceremony in Napa in May, a Chicago reception in June, and a Michigan reception in July. I was lucky enough to work with them for their Chicago reception with family and friends at the Art Institute of Chicago – Modern Wing.

Sarah and Jeff had a weekend celebration in Chicago with a rehearsal dinner at Carnivale on a Friday night. Guests were treated to appetizers like Shrimp Ceviche and Veal Empanada and entrees like Arrachera and Paella. Shutterbooth was also on hand to capture the festivity of the evening!

The next day found Sarah and Jeff having a relaxing day together and Sarah having Pin Me Up Chicago treat her to hair and make-up appointments at her home. We met the beaming couple that afternoon at the Art Institute of Chicago – Modern Wing and Rebecca from Rebecca Marie Photography & Design whisked them away for photos together and with their families.

That evening, we gathered the couple and their guests back up in Bluhm Terrace for Cocktail Hour. Guests were greeted with passed appetizers of Cantonese Spring Rolls and Coriander Grass-Fed Beef Tenderloins under a canopy of red Chinese Lanterns and a beautiful Chicago evening. As they made their way into Terzo Piano, guests picked up their escort cards which featured Chinese Red, the Double Happiness symbol and beautiful calligraphy from Stacey Shapiro. Incorporating elements of Chinese culture into their wedding day was important to Sarah and Jeff, as they met in Shanghai when both of them were working there.

Alexandra from Exquisite Designs provided a clean and modern décor that featured mixed collections of white tulips, white hydrangeas, white roses, white lilies and white spray roses in clear glass square vases lined with black ti leaves. For some contrast in the room, the round dinner tables featured a tall arrangement of open cut white calla lilies in a clear glass tall cylinder vase. With a couple of speeches to kick off the night, guests enjoyed an amazing dinner from Bon Appetit with monogrammed Petit Fours for dessert and DJ Rob spinning the 1’s and 2’s. Congratulations to a spectacular couple, Sarah & Jeff!

So Grateful!

Hard to believe this year is coming to an end.  We have so much to be thankful for!  LK Events celebrated our 5th Anniversary this August and we are so grateful for our incredible colleagues in this industry who have supported us these past five years and watched us grow as a company.  In those five years we have also worked with so many couples that have inspired us, laughed with us, and made it so easy and fun to do our job. We thank each and every one of you from the bottom of our hearts!

Have a safe and Happy Holiday Season Everyone!

Wedding-Events-Planner-Lauren-Knuepfer-98 I have so much to be thankful for this year.  First and foremost, my son Jack was born in March and I never knew I could love anyone more.  He makes me want to be a better mother, wife and career woman.  It’s crazy how much my world has changed with him in it but I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I cherish every minute that I get to spend with him and I am grateful for our time together.

I am forever grateful to my husband, Bryan, for allowing me to run my company and plan weddings while also being a Mom.  He is the most hands-on Dad and I love him more everyday that I see him with our son.

I am grateful for my incredible team – Nicole, Jennifer and Allison.  I am so proud of all you have done, your accomplishments as planners and business women.  You have taken LK Events further than I ever thought possible and I am truly grateful.  Thank you, for all you do.

I am incredibly lucky to be the daughter of Nancy and Robb who celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary on the same day I celebrated our 3rd this year.  I have the most loving in laws and together, these four grandparents are always available and love spending time with Jack and their other 3 other grandchildren.  I am an Aunt to Robby, Grace, William, Clare, Johnny and Ethan and we are now within blocks of each other.   My siblings and friends – thank you for being you.  I am surrounded by the most caring and loving family and friends and this time of year reminds me how truly blessed we are.

To My Uncle Jim – may you rest in peace and know we are thinking about you constantly.  We will miss you this Holiday Season…but we know you are smiling down on us and toasting with us.  I Love You.

Love,
Lauren Knuepfer Rozum

Wedding-Events-Planner-Nicole-Zenner-108 Wow, another year has gone by and 2014 has been a year of many blessings, and for that I am so incredibly thankful. My faith continues to grow stronger and my word to reflect on all year has been “Grace.” I have felt grace this year and I have strived to show grace to others.

I am thankful for my parents, Mark & Jeanne. The unconditional love and support from them fills my heart with joy and security. With 40 years of marriage under their belt, their relationship inspires me. I am thankful for my “little” brothers, Shaun & Christopher. They and their families make me laugh, keep me humble, and allow me to travel the U.S.

I am thankful for my friends who understand my never-ending work schedule and always seem to be available when I need to catch up over a football game or a glass of champagne and oysters. Lastly, I am thankful for my LK Events family – Lauren, Jennifer & Allison. These brilliant ladies lift me up each day and I am forever grateful.

Love,
Nicole Zenner

Wedding-Events-Planner-Jennifer-Crouch-119 As 2014 comes to a close I look back on what has been quite a year for me both personally and professionally.  I love learning about other cultures while traveling the world and this year I was fortunate enough to take an amazing trip with one of my besties, Katie, to Morocco, Portugal and Spain.  Morocco was an amazing experience and reinforced my belief to never judge a book by its cover but to only look at what is on the inside as that is where the beauty truly lies.  I am thankful that I could buy my first place and make a home for myself and my furry kids, Oliver and Gloria.

I am grateful for my health.  I am forever in debt to all of the geniuses that have given us the technology we have so we may stay in contact with our loved ones all over the world.  I am in awe of the young men my nephews, Colton and Gabriel, have become and appreciate that they still make time for their auntie despite their busy schedules.  I am honored to still have my Grandma Nelson at age 93 to learn from and that she is still able to live on her own.  Thank you to my “little” cousins Scott & Jeff and their families for your service in our Air Force.  A huge thank you to my patient and wonderful friends for understanding my crazy schedule and for always believing in me and being by my side through everything.

To my parents who have to be the two most selfless parents a child could hope for.  They were willing and did drop everything in their lives to be by my side when I needed them most and I know would do it again and again if need be.  To my LK ladies I am so fortunate to have the three of you in my life.  You ladies have been such an inspiration to me and I am thankful daily that I have you to grow with professionally and personally and to drink another glass of wine with too.

Love,
Jennifer Crouch

I Wedding-Events-Planner-Allison-112 find myself full of thanks this year, and so happy to be able to share it with the amazing friends and family that I am lucky enough to have by my side. I am so thankful that I was blessed enough to marry my best friend this year. Dave, thank you for being an amazing husband and friend. I am grateful for my parents, Bob & Carol, whose unconditional love keeps me motivated and full of life. My grandparents, Anna & Bill have been married for 65 years and still hold each other tight – you have been, and always will be, role models for our whole family. My brother, Joe, the free spirit who teaches me to take risks and never settle.  The Young family – David, Jane, Cara, Andrew, Allison, Eric and my two nieces Haven and Eden, thank you for welcoming me with open arms and smiles as I (formally) joined your family.

This past year brought so many new and exciting changes, and I am beyond thankful for the friends who always believed in me and handed me a glass of wine and a giggle through it all.  Lastly, I am so lucky to be able to call my LK Events colleagues life long friends and mentors. Thank you, Lauren, Nicole, and Jennifer for teaching me something new everyday all through never–ending laughs. I am constantly motivated by each of your spirits and dedication.

Love,
Allison DeKnight Young

Becky & Nick, Chicago Winter Wedding

With the temperatures falling in Chicago again, I am instantly reminded of Becky & Nick’s winter wedding from earlier this year. Nick’s mother had contacted LK Events to help with the logistics of the wedding, because she wanted to ensure the couple enjoyed their day and were not too stressed out for the months leading up to the wedding day.

Becky & Nick chose to have a “First Look” at Bond Chapel on the University of Chicago campus and Stoffer Photography captured this moment so brilliantly. How romantic are the historic buildings, the falling snow, and this adorable couple? Guests began arriving at Bond Chapel as the snow really started to fall and it added to the whimsical feeling of the day for Becky & Nick. A very unique touch to their wedding ceremony was that Becky’s father performed the ceremony. Not many brides are able to say that!

After the vows and rings were exchanged, guests were then ushered out of the chapel and transported over to the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts. They were greeted with hot apple cider and hot chocolate as they mingled together and left messages for the couple in their guest book. Guests were then invited upstairs for cocktail hour and were treated to French Gimlets or a Hot Toddy, along with passed hors d’oeuvres like North African Spiced Meatballs and Butternut Squash Soup.

The 9th Floor Performance Hall was transformed by Lynn at Pollen into an elegant, natural, and effortless garden. The color palette revolved around soft neutral tones of blush, pale peach, champagne, ivory and grey with seasonal flowers and succulents as the feature. After both sets of parents welcomed guests to the reception, the Buffet opened, featuring Poached Atlantic Salmon and Sliced, Pepper-Crusted Bistro Steak. After the heartfelt speeches from the two matron’s of honor and best man, Becky and Nick enjoyed their First Dance with the snow continuing to fall outside. Congratulations to Becky & Nick!

Kathy & Basil, Fusion Wedding

I had the pleasure of working with Kathy and Basil, planning their fall wedding atThe Adler Planetarium.  Kathy lived in Ft. Myers during the planning, Basil was in Boston and his Mother was in Ohio.  I actually love planning weddings for out of town clients, because we get to spend such quality time together when they come into town.  That’s exactly how the planning process was when Kathy, Basil and May would come into town.

Kathy and Basil chose The Adler Planetarium for their wedding reception due to its iconic Chicago location and view.  We created an intimate setting for cocktail hour outside on the terrace, overlooking Lake Michigan.   White Planter boxes filled with greenery lined the perimeter of the lower terrace and varying potted trees enclosed the space for guests to enjoy sips and small bites catered by Food For Thought.  We used a beautiful zebra wooden bar with a custom grey fabric panel insert to coordinate with the bride’s colors.  Grey and yellow lounge groupings allowed guests to relax before dinner.

We used individual sunflower blooms for the Escort Cards and guests were seated at a mix of Rectangle Grey Farm Tables and Square Dining Tables.   The tables were adorned with white hydrangea, yellow garden roses, yellow ranunculus, while phalaenopsis orchids, white anemone, dusty miller and brunia.  We used coordinating pillar candles and mercury glass to complete the look.  HDO tented the upper terrace and we used that space for a cigar bar.  Inside the tent were tufted black leather sofas, zebra wooden bars and wooden tables to create the masculine bar.

Guests enjoyed an incredible custom menu designed by the Bride and Groom and Food For Thought‘s executive Chef, which included: Heirloom Tomato Salad for the first course and Moroccan Zucchini and Eggplant in a Squash Tajine for the second course.  The entrée was a trio or Chicken Shish Taouk, Pan Roasted Halibut and Beef Filet, followed by a Cheese Course and a Dessert Station, Gelato Bar and Wedding Cake.   We even surprised the guests  with a firework show at the end of the evening.  We had so much fun planning their wedding and I will never forget this incredible family!

Christine & Manny, Fulton’s On The River

I always looked forward to my meetings with Christine and Manny as they are a couple that is always happy, warm, kind and considerate. Who wouldn’t want to be around that? We would always meet at the Caribou between both of our places and there was always much laughter and merriment as we went through their wedding details.

The JW Marriott suite was alive with laughter, music and hairspray when I arrived on their wedding day. Tammy from Leathem Photography captured all of the little details including the handkerchief gifts for Christine’s mother and mother-in-law. With the girls all primed for the wedding day celebration, we traveled up to St. Vincent de Paul Parish to meet up with Manny and his groomsmen. Christine and Manny had decided they wouldn’t see each other before their ceremony, so we helped orchestrate the arrival of both groups at the church.

Christine & Manny’s ceremony was very heartfelt and prayerful and really reflected their faith as a couple. It was beautiful to witness. After the celebration at the church ended, Christine, Manny and their wedding party took photos in the church and then we boarded the mini bus for some photos by the Chicago River. Tammy was able to capture some stunning images – both of this amazing couple and our beautiful city.

As guests arrived at Fulton’s on the River for the cocktail hour, Christine, Manny & the Wedding Party boarded a River Taxi and pulled up to the patio balcony waving to all of their friends and family. Such a unique entrance! Guests were treated with passed appetizers of Firecracker Shrimp and Beef Tataki and soon we were moved inside for dinner. After an amazing meal of Filet Mignon or Seared Salmon, the dancing began. It was a night of celebration for both Christine and Manny featuring their beloved Dibs – the DePaul Blue Demons mascot – and a Chicago Blackhawks win over the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final – Manny is a huge fan!! Congratulations again to such a beautiful, faith-filled, and fun couple, Christine & Manny!

Dena & Travis, The Rookery

This wedding brings back so many happy and cherished memories of our planning discussions, meetings and the amazing day I had with Dena & Travis at The Rookery.  I met Dena and her mother, Anne, about six months prior to their wedding as they did a tour of the venue and I knew that we were going to have a fabulous experience together. I loved their soft spoken mannerisms, love for food, and their vision for an elegant and unique Chicago wedding.

From the start of the day, I knew it was going to be a marvelous wedding day because my cab driver was singing along to a love song as he transported me to the W Chicago City Center. When I walked into the bridal suite, Dena and her bridesmaids were finishing their hair and make-up appointments with Zee Gustafson and there was much excitement in the air. Rebecca of Rebecca Marie Photography and Design captured so many little details before Dena and Travis had their First Look.

Travis went ahead to Olive Park, while Dena, the Wedding Party, and parents all boarded the mini-bus to the park. Dena and Travis had a very special moment together – doesn’t she look like a model/angel – and I loved when they practiced dancing and their dip together.  After more wedding party and family photos, we all headed to The Rookery to relax a little before the ceremony began.

Guests arrived through the gorgeous entrance into the ivory draped room facing the grand staircase. Not a dry eye was to be found after the heart-felt ceremony concluded and guests were very ready to celebrate with Dena & Travis. They made their way upstairs to the mezzanine to congratulate Dena & Travis and partake in cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.  Meanwhile, the amazing teams at Jewell Events Catering and Scarlet Petal transformed the main floor for dinner.

After a wonderful meal of Pear & Gourmet Greens Salad and either Lemon-Rosemary Roasted Chicken Breast or Grilled Bistro Beef Filet, everyone enjoyed some cupcakes from Bittersweet and a lively dance floor, courtesy of DJ Chicago.  As the evening concluded, guests were able to take home a little piece of Chicago with the adorably elegant Garrett’s Popcorn bags. What an elegant celebration for two very dear people – congratulations Dena & Travis!!  PS – I miss our chats, Anne!

Karri & Doug, Oak Brook Hills Marriott

As we slowly move into Spring this year, I am reminded of the start of my wedding season last year. Even though we had some weather and flooding concerns the week of Karri & Doug’s wedding, their day dawned with sunshine and good favor. With the couple and their attendants getting ready at The Palmer House Hilton, there were many beautiful areas to capture their “First Look” and wedding portraits. Wally from Timothy Whaley & Associates did an amazing job keeping us on time and soon we were off for photos around the city.

Prairie Trailways provided us with the trolley transportation to the Wells Street Bridge and the Cancer Survivor Park for some “in the moment” photos of Karri & Doug with their attendants. We had a beautiful April day together! Soon we were off to Old St. Patrick’s Church for their gorgeous Catholic ceremony. Once their vows and rings were exchanged, we all ventured to the Oak Brook Hills Marriott with transportation provided by Prairie Trailways.

Karri and Doug took some time for photos on the property before we let guests into the hotel’s tented reception area. Karri had worked with All Flowers by Marisa for the purple and grey décor elements – such stunning vignettes! Guests were able to nosh on a Chilled Seafood Display and Scallops wrapped in Bacon and check out the custom cake topper.  I loved it because Karri & Doug’s humor shone through!  Dinner featured a Roasted Amish Chicken Breast or a Filet Mignon and after some heartfelt toasts, we were ready to begin dancing. The most memorable dance was the Mother/Son dance because Doug’s mother surprised him. While MDM Entertainment started the dance with “In My Life” by the Beatles, the song switched to “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Metallica and Doug’s mother transformed to a headbanger! The guests went crazy over that!

Congratulations again to Karri and Doug…and to their little bundle of joy that will arrive this year!
