Elegant Fall Wedding at University Club, Sarah & TJ

I met Sarah almost a year before her wedding day and distinctly remember our two days of traveling around Chicago to find the perfect venue for her and TJ’s wedding. The couple had already decided that they were going to have their wedding ceremony at Saint Clement, and they wanted to find the perfect reception venue to celebrate in. I was very excited that they chose The University Club of Chicago, as Cathedral Hall is an elegant and iconic room in Chicago.

Sarah found Todd James Photography through a friend and he captured the day so beautifully. From the first snowfall of the season, to the faith-filled ceremony, to the beautiful reception in Cathedral Hall, the celebration and joy from Sarah & TJ emanate from their photos. Getting caught in the first snowfall was not planned; however, we all embraced the moment and laughed our way through snowflakes in our eyes and wet snow in our shoes! Along with Todd, Aaron Bean was also onsite to capture all of the moments on video, especially the getting ready karaoke moment from the ladies, such a treasured moment.

Given Sarah’s personality and vision for her wedding day, I knew that she had to meet Alexandra from Exquisite Designs. The two of them hit it off right away and Alexandra designed a beautiful color story and centerpieces that were the perfect look for a fall wedding. I’m completely in love with the Sarah’s bouquet and the lush head table garland. Sarah also has a similar paper goods obsession that I do, so I knew the perfect place for her stationery items would be at Magnificent Milestones. From the menu cards with quotes on them to the matchbooks with their hashtag, they were the little details that helped to make Sarah & TJ’s celebration truly unique. I also loved that they had Allie Hasson create a custom crest to be used as their guest book!

The final touch to Sarah & TJ’s celebration was the music. They wanted a packed dance floor and I knew that Sarah & TJ would love Gold Coast Events and they were over the moon with The Chicago Players. The special surprise was that Sarah’s family organized a flash mob on the dance floor to “Shut Up and Dance” and the look on her face is priceless! Congratulations Sarah & TJ! I was so honored to have been on this journey with you!

Door County Nuptials, Megan & Darrin

I don’t even know where to start with the journey that I had with Megan, Darrin & their parents. Theirs was one of the more memorable weddings that I have worked on, from beginning to end. Their wedding was a team effort – they provided the direction and I helped to curate our team to make their dream a reality. Plus we had a lot of fun and laughter together along the way.

Megan knew that she wanted to get married at her parent’s home in Fish Creek, WI. The next step was to find the right tent company to bring their vision to life. Arena Americas was able to provide the custom size, clear tent that would set the stage for this elegantly eclectic celebration in Door County, WI. Given Megan & Darrin’s hip and laid-back style, I knew I had to introduce them to John & Maura of Stoffer Photography. Their personalities meshed so well and John & Maura were able to capture every detail of the wedding weekend. I absolutely love the sweet First Look, magical First Dance, and the celebratory fireworks, which were a surprise for Darrin!

It was important to the family to use as many local event professionals and it was a fun experience to broaden my network and work with some great companies from Green Bay and Door County. There was Chives, who provided guests with culinary treats like Whitefish Bruschetta, a Raw Bar presented in a canoe, and a family style dinner that featured Fried Perch with Lobster Remoulade. Jeff from Twigs created lush garlands around the ceremony structure and on our wood tables and we brought in re:find Joy to help us with brass accent pieces. Mary from Alpha Delights created the perfect wedding cake for Megan and Darrin, but also provided an abundant and decadent sweets table for the guests to enjoy throughout the evening.

The comfort of their guests was very important to Megan and Darrin, so we researched multiple accommodations to be able to offer guests, including some VRBO homes. (This proved to be a bit of a challenge because September is still in the tourist season in Door County and our room blocks expired months before the wedding date.) They created custom welcome bags for each guest and provided trolley transportation throughout the weekend. Family and friends were also invited to the Rehearsal Dinner the day before the wedding, and the Brunch, the morning after the wedding. It really was a weekend celebration!

There were so many moments of the actual wedding day that stand out to me: the relaxed but excited atmosphere when the girls were getting ready that morning in the house, the string octet playing All of the Lights while Megan walked down the aisle, witnessing Megan and Darrin exchange their vows in front of all of their families and friends, the teamwork we had in creating a magical environment for guests in the tent, the heartfelt welcome by Megan’s father, the surprise performance of “The Cover Girls” during dinner, and a packed dance floor all night long thanks to The Becca Kaufman Orchestra. It was a night I will never forget and I know Megan, Darrin, their families and friends will not forget either!

Congratulations Megan & Darrin! I was truly honored to be a party of your beautiful celebration!

A little note from the couple:

It is difficult to find the words to express our gratitude to Nicole and LK Events for everything that was done help Darrin and I make our dream wedding a reality. Nicole’s graciousness and enthusiasm set the tone for our planning and for the wedding itself.
Nicole was on top of everything!  Her connections with reputable vendors and her ability to keep everyone on task took all of the weight off of our shoulders.  She and her team made multiple trips from Chicago up to Wisconsin to meet with our families and vendors over the planning year to ensure first hand that everything was taken care of.  All I had to do was send Nicole an email about an idea I had about music, bridesmaid gifts or photography and she would respond right away that she would take care of it…and she always did!
On the weekend of the wedding Nicole and her team worked tirelessly to coordinate set-up so that Darrin and I could spend time with our family and friends who had traveled to celebrate the weekend with us.  All that was left for us to do was sit back and enjoy some champagne!

Post-script from Nicole:

The logistics of planning this wedding in Door County, along with the teamwork from everyone involved and the fun that I had with the couple and their families prompted me to submit this wedding for the 2016 NICE Award for Best Logistical Achievement. We were announced as a nominee and the award ceremony was held in Chicago on April 12, 2016. We are very pleased to say that we won the Award! It truly took an amazing team of event professionals to bring the wedding to life!
I also submitted this wedding for the 2016 ILEA Esprit Awards for Best Wedding over $150,000. This was the first time I had submitted my work for an Esprit Award and we were truly honored to be announced as a nominee. The award ceremony was held in Austin, TX, on August 13, 2016, and we were shocked and humbled to have won the Award! With that, I again thank everyone listed below for every part they played in Megan & Darrin’s celebration!

Outdoor Lake Wedding, Mollie & David

Mollie and Dave’s wedding weekend focused on their love for each other and of their family, friends and details. With Mollie being from Wisconsin and Dave’s family owning property in Wisconsin there was no other option that made sense other than to have a tented wedding on Dave’s family’s property.

After their rehearsal at St. Patrick’s Church, Jones Travel brought everyone to the Lady of the Lake for a cruise around the lake during dinner. Lilypots designed wooden box centerpieces of blue hydrangea and mini sunflowers. The musicians of Bourbon Aristocracy entertained their guests while they dined on a yummy lake-style menu including Oven Fried Chicken, Buttered Corn Niblets and Pecan Bars from Gooseberries. Christy and James from Christy Tyler Photography were on board to capture the start of their wedding weekend.

The ladies started their day having their hair and makeup done by Clear Waters Salon and Spa Lake Geneva and Stacey Zielinski while the guys enjoyed a laid back breakfast at the Grand Geneva. And then it was time for Mollie and Dave’s first look with Wedding Party photos to follow. Mollie and Dave had a beautiful ceremony performed by Father Oriol Regales of St Patrick’s Parish and a close family friend, Pastor Ray Carter.

After the Ceremony everyone headed to Dave’s family’s property for a fun and relaxing Cocktail Hour. While Mollie and Dave were out taking photos on the beautiful property their guests were snacking on yummy hors d’oeuvres including a Wisconsin Cheese Station. There were so many fun and thoughtful details for their guests including placing blankets on the wooden picnic benches so no ones clothes would get snagged. Guests were seen playing washers, bags, bocce ball and croquet. Propped up against a tree was a makeshift beer cooler that was the base of a sailboat and of course there were “On Lake Time” koozies to go with the beer. Another special touch was the guest book, which was a map created by the couple of the Cocktail Hour & Reception Grounds for everyone to sign.

When it was time for dinner their guests headed into the tent that Madison Wedding Flowers had turned into a rustic wonderland. The head table was a farm table that was adorned with floating candles and hand-tied garland of Salal, Silver Dollar and both Seeded and Spiral Eucalyptus with white flowers scattered throughout and garland trailing down the sides of the tables. The rest of the farm tables were decorated with a similar garland. The remaining tables had gray linen with floating candles and rectangular wooden boxes that were filled with mixed foliage, succulents and flowers. Pastor Ray Carter started dinner with a blessing and then their harvest salad was served. Mollie’s father and sister and Dave’s brother all gave heartfelt toasts. Dinner was a yummy buffet showcasing Saz’s pulled pork, cherry wood smoked chicken, grilled vegetable kabob and of course cheddar and chive mashed potatoes. Mollie and Dave thanked everyone for being there while Dave took a panoramic photo of the entire room and then they danced to Overwhelmed by Big Daddy Weave. After their dance Mollie danced with her dad and Dave with his mom to Landslide by Fleetwood Mac and then it was time for everyone to get on the dance floor.

When guests weren’t dancing the night away to the music played by Ken Arlen’s Front of the House Band they were often seen enjoying the pies, small bars and cookies baked by Lakeland Bakery. And when they weren’t enjoying a strawberry rhubarb pie, carrot cake bar or chocolate chunk cookie they were found out in front of the tent in the Adirondack chairs by the fire pit making S’mores. Luminaires & Tiki Torches lined the pathways for their guests.

Mollie and Dave worked their tails off on designing all of their paper items and signage themselves. They created the floor plans for Cocktail Hour and the Reception and all of their paper items from the invitations to the escort cards to the welcome booklet in the welcome bags. They made all the signage for the day of including the welcome sign, bathroom signs, “Kalamazoo and Hinsdale” this way signs, menu signs, sweets signs and table numbers.

We were honored to be a part of their wedding and were so glad that Christy Tyler Photography and Corey Lillard including his drone were there to capture all of it. Mollie and Dave’s Wedding was truly unique to them and their family and friends.

Irene & Rich, The Racquet Club of Chicago

Congratulations to Irene and Rich who welcomed their son, Luis Felix Paris into the world on March 9th.  He is absolutely beautiful and we could not be happier for you all!

We had so much fun on Irene and Rich’s wedding day.  We began the day getting ready in Irene’s home with her closest friends and family by her side.   After getting dressed in her Amsale gown, Irene met Rich for their first look at the South Gardens of the Art Institute.   Photos continued around the city and then we came back to the Racquet Club to get ready for the ceremony.

Irene carried a textural bouquet composed of blush and white peonies, white ranunculus, blush and white roses and elegant stephanotis blossoms. Guests were greeted by a striking display of monobotanic and monochromatic bouquets in varying glass cylinder vases on mirrored pedestals.  Irene and Rich exchanged vows framed by a collection of pedestals hosting lush floral in an asymmetric configuration.

Irene is from Venezuela so many of their guests were traveling internationally.   It was so important that their friends and family felt comfortable and at home while enjoying the wedding reception. Heffernan Morgan brought in tufted brown leather bars and dark wooden and iron bistro tables for the lounge that allowed their friends and family to sit back and relax throughout the evening.  Guests enjoyed mini chicken empanadas and lamb lollipops and the Racquet Club’s famous sausage en croute along with a gorgeous raw bar display.

The dining tables were adorned with blush peonies, ivory hydrangea, bright green viburnum and pink roses.  We completed the look with tapered candles, pillar candles and etched glass votive candles.  After a delightful dinner of red wine braised short ribs and seared mahi mahi, guests were invited back into the lounge for cake, assorted desserts and dancing. Kent Drake was there to capture it all.  Irene and Rich have one of the most beautiful relationships and I was honored to be a part of their wedding.

Lesley & Bobby, The Trump Hotel

Some might say that Lesley and Bobby met by chance that fall day at the Badgers Football Game but with Bobby living in Chicago and Lesley in LA I would say it was actually fate that brought them together. They decided to get married in Chicago so more of their family members would be able to attend and Bobby proposing on the Terrace at the Trump Tower made it an easy choice for where they would host their reception.

Their wedding weekend started with their Rehearsal at Covenant Presbyterian Church followed by their Rehearsal Dinner at Del Frisco’s.

The day of the wedding the amazing ladies of Sonia Roselli got the girls picture perfect while the photographers from Studio This Is and the videographers from One Fine Day started documenting their wedding day.

Once boutonnieres were pinned and bouquets handed out we headed to Covenant Presbyterian Church making sure to keep Lesley tucked away so Bobby wouldn’t see her until she walked down the aisle with her dad. Lesley wore a full ball gown with a sweetheart neckline and the bottom of the dress was all hand sewn lace and of course a long train. Her bouquet was white peonies in various stages of bloom. The altar of the gorgeous church was decorated with a tall cylinder clear vase on each side with overflowing white hydrangea, white peonies, coral charm peonies and juliette peach garden roses. After Lesley and Bobby said I do they were off for photos around the city with their wedding party.

The amazing team from Fleur decorated the guest tables with arrangements of overflowing coral peonies, peach juliette garden roses, peachy pink ranunculus and a few white polo garden roses atop a clear glass cube vase. And then in two smaller clear glass cube vases were a collection of coral peonies and juliette garden roses.

Dan from The Gold Coast Orchestra introduced the newlyweds into their reception where they went straight into cutting their gorgeous cake from Cake. Their guests listened to toasts from Lesley’s dad, their siblings and Bobby’s Best Man while they dined on their Grilled Beef Tenderloin, Lemon Grass Poached Halibut and Roasted Vegetable Tian.

Lesley still had one more surprise for Bobby, which was a Groom’s Cake in the shape of his Wisconsin Badger Mascot. After dinner it was time for Lesley and Bobby’s thank you toast and their first dance along with Lesley’s dance with her Father and Bobby’s with his Mother. Then it was time for the dancing to begin. We did sneak them away for sunset photos on the terraces – with that view at sunset how could we not? Their guests were treated with some late night snacks among those of course were Chicago-style hot dogs and mini root beer ice cream floats.

It was such a beautiful and meaningful day with family as the focus. I feel so fortunate that Lesley and Bobby entrusted me with their wedding day. Wishing you two and Doug the dog a lifetime of happiness!!

Katy & Karl, The Modern Wing @ The Art Institute of Chicago

Katy and Karl are two of the sweetest people I know.  I was in awe of how calm and collected Katy was throughout the entire process, especially on her wedding day.  Katy is beautiful inside and out and it was my absolute pleasure getting to work with her and her wonderful family through the wedding planning process.  Katy and Karl fell in love with the Modern Wing at the Art Institute and we had so much fun bringing her wedding vision to life with the help of Revel Décor.  Greenlight kept the dance floor packed all night long (not surprised!) and Katy looked flawless.

Katy carried a loosely tied bouquet of ivory and blush pink floral accented with dark burgundy and finished with pale green foliage.  The bridesmaids, wearing navy blue, carried ivory and blush bouquets that complimented Katy.  Guests entered Terzo Piano for the ceremony and were greeted with a dramatic drape installation and cascading floral along the west windows that overlooked the city.  Katy and the bridal party walked down a custom fabric aisle runner. Greenlight’s quartet played throughout the ceremony, and we surprised guests with the bride’s uncle’s choir who sang a few songs during and ended the ceremony with, “Oh Happy Day!” Guests are still talking about the performance that started the evening on such a high.  After cocktail hour on Bluhm Terrace overlooking the city, guests were escorted downstairs to Griffin Court for dinner.  Greenlight began playing and guests quickly joined the dance floor and started dancing.  It was the perfect way to kick off the evening!

Revel designed long rectangle tables with a “floating garland” of pale and dark green foliage, white floral and pops of suspended greenery.  The square tables hosted beautiful collections of succulents, foliage and gold mercury candlelight.  The round tables were adorned with romantic ivory, pale blush pink blossoms, rich burgundy accents and trailing greenery.  We had two lounge vignettes set up on each side of Griffin Court, Hampton style bars and free standing mirrored menus.  This was the perfect completion to the garden inspired party.

Guests enjoyed a crispy artichoke and Brussels sprout salad with watermelon gazpacho.  Following the duet first course, guests were served a choice of beef tenderloin or grilled salmon.  Guests finished the meal with a tray of sweets on every table that included house made peanut butter cups, cheesecake lollipops, fruit tarts and truffles.  Vrai and One Fine Day were there with us from the rehearsal dinner on Friday until the end of the wedding night.  They captured it all!  Congrats Katy and Karl!

Kathryn & Jed, The Langham Chicago

Sophistication and grace would be the two words to describe Kathryn & Jed and their wedding day. They have a timeless style that was woven throughout their wedding day. From Kathryn’s gorgeous Vera Wang gown to the gardenia blossoms at each place setting, it was a classic celebration captured by Elena Banzini Photography and LEAP Weddings.

Kathryn & Jed worked together to incorporate personal items into their day, like Kathryn’s ceremony procession to Clair de Lune, having their friend read an excerpt from “Gift By the Sea” during the ceremony, and introducing their wedding party to the tune of Cissy Strut.

Vince Hart from Kehoe Designs worked with Kathryn and her mother to create a spring, Southern look to The Langham’s Devonshire Ballroom. Using flowering branches, white orchids, white tulips, mint hydrangea, and touches of green camelia foliage, guests were transported to a lovely, spring garden. Guests then enjoyed a first course of Maine lobster risotto with English peas, red sorrell, vanilla bean oil and espelette. A choice entrée of organic salmon or slow-roasted filet mignon followed, with the granddaddy of a finish…a custom four-tier cake from Elysia Root Cakes.

Kathryn & Jed chose to work with a choreographer for their first dance and they were such a striking pair, gliding over the dance floor to the Chicago Catz’s rendition of Love Is Here to Stay. Congratulations to Kathryn & Jed, a couple who will never go out of style!

Stephanie & Chris, Morgan Manufacturing

It was an honor to help plan Stephanie and Chris’ April Wedding last year. Stephanie and I have known each other for years as she used to be the events coordinator at the Chicago History Museum while I was working at Food For Thought.  Together, we planned countless weddings and became fast friends.  When she got engaged to Chris, needless to say, I was ecstatic.  Stephanie has impeccable taste and after choosing Morgan Manufacturing for her wedding venue, I knew this was going to be an incredible wedding weekend.

Food was one of the most important parts of the wedding planning process to them since they had traveled all over the world (and would soon be living in China) so we wanted to create a menu that was a reflection of their travels but also unique and fun for their guests.  Food For Thought designed Stephanie and Chris’ worldly menu that consisted of a Dim Sum Station with bahn mi’s, shu mai and pot stickers served in mini bamboo plates with chop sticks and accompaniments, a South American Station with skewers, mini chorizo sandwiches, rice and beans and plantain chips served on a black griddle top and a Middle Eastern Station with shawarma, gyros, gnocchi and a traditional Greek salad.  We ended the evening with mini Chicago style hot dogs and fried cheese curds (thanks to Chris’ alma mater), Madison, Wisconsin style….with Tiger Sauce.   Chris also flew in Milkbar (the bride’s favorite bakery in New York City) to surprise her with her wedding cake and cake truffles.  Stephanie was so surprised and loved it!

Revel Décor provided a gorgeous landscape of botanical based floral that was seasonal and organic – exactly what Stephanie had envisioned for her wedding day.  Stephanie carried a lush white bouquet with herb elements and black ”berry” accents (navy centered anemones and black seeded eucalyptus).  The bridesmaids wore varying shades of grey and held red anemones and red ranunculous.  They looked amazing all put together!

The ceremony was held inside Morgan Manufacturing and Revel hung a cluster of natural Manzanita branches showcasing draped greenery that hung behind the couple. We lined the aisle with pedestals and candles adding a glow to the walkway.   We had three looks for the reception design each on wooden rectangle dining tables.  One table had a greenery garland with botanical elements, votive candles and mixed metal candle holders.  The second look had a collection of candles and botanical elements that included lisianthus, anemones, white roses, black berries and greenery.  The third design had a knotted drift wood piece on the dining table with succulents, airplants and white floral finished with an ambient glow from the candles.  The reception looked stunning and we finished the look by hanging a large Edison bulb chandelier over the dance floor. The room looked amazing!  Amanda Hein captured this day beautifully while the Gold Coast All Stars kept the dance floor packed all night!

Stephanie and Chris met in graduate school at Northwestern.  They are two of the funniest people I know and they were always making each other laugh.  We had the best time together but more importantly I was honored to be a part of a dear friend of mine’s wedding.   Stephanie and Chris are a perfect match and I am so excited to see where life takes them.  For now, they are beginning their life as a married couple in China.

Linens and Tabletop Rentals with Brooke from BBJ Linen

Guest Blogger: Brooke from BBJ Linen

What colors or textures are popping for a 2016 Winter or Spring wedding?

With so many weddings happening every year I find clients desiring to “being different” – So we focus on the DETAILS. Many of the new details include layering linen and adding dimension to create a tablescape versus just covering a naked table. Whether that means taking beloved “traditional” colors and making the tabletop literally pop with three-dimensional embellishing Charger plates, or experimenting with runners and overlays.

We think chair covers for weddings are a thing of the past, do you agree? What is on the horizon for fabrics at events (both weddings and corporate)?

As long as there are typical stackable Ballroom Chairs, there will always be chair covers. Chair covers have migrated from being on trend to now being functional. But why not have fun with function and rent a Spandex cover in a brilliant color to enhance the Corporate branding of your client or an even funky pattern? With so many chair options available for rent, our designers are creating amazing accents for any occasion including chair backs, ribbon tie accents, chair jackets, or even cascading ruffles. The possibilities are endless, which is what makes our job as BBJ designers so fun! We have the capability to design, create and implement the clients vision.

What was your favorite theme event and what role did BBJ Linen have in it?

This season, it’s all about woodland motifs, natural fibers, creatively displays and tons of metallic accents. My favorite twist on that (so far) has been A Fire and Ice Wedding designed by Monica Richards of Mon Amie Events in Indianapolis. Working together with Monica and The Alexander Hotel, we created guest experience that began with a HOT Cocktail reception of all Crimson linen and lighting, complete with a Glass Blowing Artist to entertain. We chose monochromatic linen of all different textures to elevate experience and create visual texture as exciting as the entertainment.
The Ballroom at the Alexander was transformed into an Ice Palace fitting for Princess Elsa. The cool tones of blue lighting enhanced the alternating metallic Silver Birch and textured Nile Sonnet Linens, converging on the dance floor to create an icy flowing sea. The Turquoise Luxe Metallic Charger plates were the jewels that completed the experience.

When you have a day off in Chicago, what is your favorite thing to do, see, or eat?

Since moving to the “Country” two years ago, I love to play tourist whenever in the city. A perfect day would be an Architectural Boat Tour, followed by cocktails on the Trump Terrace. Then off to Bella Note on Grand Avenue for our traditional family dinner with my 89 year old Mother in Law, my favorite Chicago resident. And topping off the perfect day, on to the UC for a Blackhawks game! AND If I am still dreaming, seats on the glass, please…..

Sara & Jon, Cafe Brauer

Whenever people ask me if I love my job, my answer is always yes – because of couples like Sara and Jon. This couple is filled with so much love, energy, and warmth that it always puts a smile on my face when I think of our time spent planning. Even before getting engaged, Sara and Jon developed a love for Café Brauer. Walking past it daily gave them both an appreciation for the architecture and beauty of the building, so it was only natural that they decided to start their lives as Mr and Mrs there!

I am always so excited when I get to work with a groom who is as enthusiastic about planning as his bride to be, and that was the case with Jon. We started the wedding weekend off right with a fun and lively rehearsal dinner in the clubroom of their apartment building overlooking Lincoln Park. Jon was very excited to plan this evening with lots of Chicago touches for so many out of town friends and family. We had gorgeous farm tables adorned with décor designed by the brides sister and a Taco Bar courtesy of a favorite restaurant for Sara and Jon – Big Star. It was a great way to get everyone excited for the wedding celebration the following day.

Ruby The Fox set the stage with a custom designed suite honoring Sara’s love for pink and gold tones and her modern vision for the day. The signage was highlighted with lush florals gorgeously designed by Stems Chicago. The room was filled with soft pink garden roses, peonies, black and white anemones, ranunculus and lots of lush greenery to warm the space in Café Brauer and highlight the architecture. Sara was surprised by her students the week of her wedding with long strands of paper cranes, which her students learned were symbols for peace and to grant wishes for the recipient. We used them to adorn the archway where Sara and Jon got to say their vows – so sweet!

Dabble Me This expertly captured every moment of the day and Toast & Jam kept the dance floor packed all night long. I am so happy for Sara and Jon on their marriage and even happier that I get to call them friends. Congrats to you, S+J!
